Dr Alex Kahl is a Senior Advisor in the Bureau of Energy Resources at the U.S. Department of State, where he provides guidance and expertise on Middle East Energy with a focus on Iraq and Iran. In this role, he advises senior State Department officials on promoting US interests through energy security, and leveraging energy issues as a tool for political cooperation and economic opportunity. He provides insight and geopolitical analysis on regional oil and gas development to Senior US officials, and advises on opportunities where energy diplomacy supports US national security. Prior to joining the State Department, Dr Kahl was the senior scientist at Palmer Station in Antarctica, a position he assumed after completing his doctoral research on carbon biogeochemistry. He holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree and a Bachelor’s of Arts degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and earned his Doctorate from Rutgers University in New Jersey.
